What is Sciatica? Our West Omaha Chiropractor Explains
When you have lower back pain you may think you have sciatica in West Omaha, NE. However, this is a very specific type of back pain that differs from a herniated disc or torn muscle. If you have a sharp pain, numbness, tingling, or are unable to stand because of lower back pain, you might be suffering from sciatic nerve pain. Learn more about what sciatica is and how we treat it here at Kosak Chiropractic and Acupuncture in West Omaha, NE.
Sciatica is a form of nerve pain that is also known as sciatic nerve pain. This condition is due to pressing against the sciatic nerve, which runs through each leg and extends to the lower back region. When you have sciatica it leads to a burning sensation or sharp pain within the specific area where the nerve is being pressed. This pain extends throughout that side of the lower back and possibly down that leg. However, when you have sciatic nerve pain you will only suffer from pain on one side of your body. This is different from other forms of lower back pain that radiate throughout the lower back area.
The most common cause of sciatica is an out of aligned musculoskeletal system. When this happens it leads to muscles that shift and unnaturally press against nerves including the sciatic nerve. If you have swollen muscles or inflammation due to lower back pain, such as a muscle tear or herniated disc, this can also put pressure on the sciatic nerve. In this instance you would have a dual diagnosis of a lower back injury, as well as sciatic nerve pain. Both would need to be treated at our West Omaha chiropractic office for a full recovery and pain relief.
We start with a comprehensive chiropractic exam to get to the source of your sciatic nerve pain. Then we can use a chiropractic adjustment or spinal decompression to realign the system. From there we offer acupuncture, as well as intersegmented traction and lifestyle advice, as forms of integrated medicine that will holistically treat your sciatica.
